A Word From the Pastor

Family Business Meeting - August 12th

The 2007-2008 church year is an exciting time to be involved with what God is doing at Front Street Baptist Church.  As you will see outlined in the Empowering the Church booklet, the committees and teams have worked diligently and prayerfully to see where it is that God is leading us this coming church year.  The Empowering the Church booklet will be available to pick up this coming Sunday in the Welcome Center or the front pews.

My prayer for our church is that as we read through the Strategic Plan, Proposed Budget and the Nominating Committee report, and that we recognize the hand of God and commit all of these areas to prayer.

I would like to thank all of you who have committed to serve this new church year and I look forward to working alongside of you.  God has blessed Front Street with many gifted people who love to use their gifts for the glory of God.  I would also like to thank all of the committee chairs, members, and teams who worked many hours to make this document a reality so that everyone in our church can see where God is leading the different ministry areas.

As you read through this booklet, it may be that God awakens your heart to an area of ministry that He would like for you to be involved with.  As is outlined in this booklet, each area has a person responsible for these areas of ministry.  Please use the prompting of God to contact one of these leaders to ask how you can fit into that area of ministry.

I am very excited in what I see God doing in our church and I count it a privilege to serve as your pastor during this time.  Please join with me in praying that God will continue to give us guidance and direction as we seek Him with all of our hearts.

Love Offering this Sunday

This coming Sunday our church will receive a love offering for a family within our church.  Please ask the Father how He would want you to help this family who has fallen upon difficult times. If you want to write a check on Sunday, please make your check out to FSBC and put "benevolence" in the memo line.

Prayer Point

The Fruit of the Spirit

"But the fruit of the (Holy) Spirit (the work which His presence within accomplishes) is love, joy, (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence).  Against such things there is no law (that can bring a charge)."  - Gal. 5:22-23, Amp. Bible

Buried within those two verses is the one fruit that gives birth to all the others.  I know what you're thinking:  "I've got it-it's love."  Wrong!  It's gentleness, or as the Amplified Bible defines it, humility.

What is humility?  Well, the opposite of humility is PRIDE, and most of us are eaten up with it!  We're proud of our knowledge, our skills, our possessions, our position, our accomplishments, our accolades, our abilities, our appearance, our family, our finances, our superiority, our stuff, and the list goes on.  And on. And on.  As Christians we're even proud of our "impeccable record" (no big sins in my life), our service to God (let me tell you how many people I led to the Lord this week), our programs, and our passions.

How can the Holy Spirit produce any other fruit in our lives, until He first brings us to the point of acknowledging what and who we are before Almighty God-nothing and no-one?  How can I love others when I am so fixated on self?  Joy comes not from self-gratification but from gratifying others. Peace is not thinking I have no sin, but knowing that my sins are forgiven.  Patience is bearing with a weaker brother or sister, remembering that I've been where they are.  Kindness and goodness flow form a heart that is humbled by thankfulness for what God has done for me.  Faithfulness is forgetting the cost and pressing on, ever mindful that Jesus was faithful to death, even the death of the cross-for me.  Gentleness is human frailty (born of complete surrender) before God, and Godly strength (bolstered by Divine love) before men.  Self-control is letting go of the power I hold over people and situations and letting God's power rule my attitudes, words, and actions.  My "empty hands" will be the symbol of my obedience to God.

Do you long for the fruit of the Spirit to be produced in your life?  "All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.'  Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time."   - 1 Peter 5:5-6

When our lives are fruitful, our prayers will be fruitful.

His servant and your friend,

ginny stikeleather

 Children in Action

Christmas in August

During the month of August, our Children in Action groups will be involved in Christmas in August.   Many have participated with this mission project in the past and are aware of the impact it has had on missionaries' lives.    This year, both CIA groups (1-3) and (4-6) will join efforts to collect items for missionary Bill Veil.  Bill is a missionary in charge of Inner Harbor Ministry in Maryland.  The following items will be collected during the entire month of August.  Please drop off your items at any of the "Christmas" collection boxes around the church.    This year, we can also donate gift cards from Walmart, Sams or Target.  If you have those, please give them to one of our CIA leaders: Sherwyn Beaver, Martha Courier, Kisha Clark or Debbie Stewart.

We look forward to seeing what God will do through this opportunity to serve!

THANK YOU!
Thank you, church family and staff, for the prayers, cards, phone calls, and words of encouragement this past week.  The loss of my grandfather is difficult and he will be missed.  But we would like to thank the church staff, New Life Sunday School class, and others for praying so diligently for his salvation.  For us to know that he is at the feet of Jesus gives us overwhelming peace.
