A Word From the Pastor

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering

The following story come from the International Mission Board and details just a portion of the significance of our Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

If you think the story of Jesus has reached every corner of South America after generations of missionary work, talk to Gabriel Mugmal.

His idol-worshipping neighbors almost burned him alive for preaching the Gospel.

Gabriel boldly shared his new faith house to house with other Quichua villagers high in the Andes Mountains of northern Ecuador. He challenged them to stop the idol worship that permeated the area. They demanded that Gabriel renounce his words. When he refused, villagers dragged Gabriel and his family to the center of town and prepared to burn them.

But Gabriel wasn't afraid and began preaching from Genesis. And when he had finished, the mood of the crowd had changed.

A local priest, moved by his willingness to die for Jesus, raised Gabriel's Bible in his hand.  "The Word of God shall be preached throughout the world," the priest said. "Keep preaching the Gospel so that everyone can know Christ."

As the crowd began to disperse, 10 families stayed behind. "How can we receive Christ?" they asked.

That was 25 years ago. Today, more than 250 villagers worship less than 200 yards from the site where Gabriel was nearly martyred. What's more, Gabriel and those he has led to Christ have started 30 Bible studies and churches in other villages dotting the Andes.

"He took the Great Commission in Matthew 28 literally," says Southern Baptist missionary Darrell Musick, who partners with Gabriel and other local leaders to spread the Gospel among the Quichua people. Musick and his wife, Rogene, met Gabriel in 2004 when he knocked on their door after walking hours across mountain trails. "God has sent me here," he told them. "I want you to train me to lead my people to Jesus." They did and have since trained more than 200 other Quichua believers in church planting and discipleship.

But missionaries in South America and all around the world need another strategic partner like Gabriel: you. They're looking for prayer warriors to under gird their ministries, for strategically involved churches to help them reach those who've never heard the Gospel, for God-called servants to join them on the field as new missionaries.

The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering makes up 50 percent of the International Mission Board's total income and the Cooperative Program 33 percent. Every penny given to Lottie Moon is used to support Southern Baptist missionaries as they share the Gospel overseas. This offering allows our church to join in a strategic global missions effort to reach the whole world. It also enables our missionaries to spend their time working to reach lost souls instead of raising their own support.

May God be glorified as we give sacrificially for the sake of the Gospel.

Pastor Tim
 Young at Heart

Happy Thanksgiving Holidays!

Missions Giving and Opportunities

Through the generosity of the members of Front Street Baptist Church at least 26 needy families in our community will be given a Thanksgiving meal in the name of Jesus.  Additionally, Front Street has given over $4,600 to the Associational Toy Store, along with lots of toys, to reach many families for Jesus Christ and provide a more joyful Christmas to hundreds of families.  You have also given greatly of your time to volunteer in the Toy Store in days past as well as in the weeks ahead.  Many additional opportunities are upcoming, such as providing a meal and Christmas tree for Teen Challenge, processing Operation Christmas Tree Shoeboxes in Boone, and later providing gifts for the residents at Teen Challenge.  One vital opportunity you have to impact this world is the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

What is the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering®?

Southern Baptist churches collect the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for the sole purpose of supporting international missions. Every penny of the offering goes to the International Mission Board's overseas budget, thus supporting our missionaries and their work.

What is the goal for this year's offering?

The national goal for the 2008 offering is $170 million. Front Street's goal is $17,000.

What role can I play?

Economic uncertainty affects your families and your church. It also affects every missionary family on the field. Their work cannot go forward without your continued sacrificial giving.  Please make plans to make a sacrificial gift so that many can hear the good news of Jesus Christ!

Operation Christmas Child

Millions of lives will be touched by the shoe box gifts collected this year. Each precious gift is carefully inspected and prepared for overseas shipment. Our church has reserved 36 places to work at the Operation Christmas Child Processing Center in Boone, NC on Friday, December 12 from 4-9 pm.  Anyone 13 years old and older can participate.  This would make a great family missions project.  Note that people might need to leave work or school early that day since we will have to leave Statesville possibly as early as 2:00 (actual time will be set soon).  Please see Kenny Lamm or email klamm@frontstreet.org if you would like to participate.

News and Announcements

Do you have news and announcements for Sunday Morning? If so, please send them to: news@frontstreet.org or call the church office by Thursday morning of that week. We will insert your announcement into our slide show presentation before the service begins. Please be sure to include any clipart or photos.

Poinsettias

This year we will use poinsettias in our sanctuary during December.  We will use 18 poinsettias at a cost of $10.50 each and one large poinsettia at a cost of $50.00.  If you wish to place a poinsettia in honor or memory of someone, please contact the church office by Wednesday, December 3.  You may pick up your poinsettias after the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service.

CARE PACKAGE EXPENSES

The Home Front Team for Kit, Avery and Lucas will be sending a Care Package to Cambodia for the Christmas Holidays.  Shipping costs will be the single biggest expense.   We are asking for help from others to cover this expense.   If you would like to help, please give through your normal offering envelope and designate on the "OTHER" line "HOME FRONT CARE PACKAGE".    Checks are still to be payable to Front Street Baptist Church.     We appreciate your help!

Thanksgiving is a time for families to get together to fellowship with the love of Christ and be thankful for our country and what we do have.  So, if you have family that loves you, learn to appreciate and accept them.  Be thankful for the air we breathe.  Think of those that have not, like the jobless and the homeless.  That alone will tell you much more than words.  Our nation should thank God, as He will not always have mercy on us.  I'm not alone, although my children have gone on before me, but I'm looking forward to the day we shall be united.  I'm thankful God is always there to lend a helping hand, though sometimes mistakes are made.  But its good to know he will mend the way.  I am Blessed and Thankful.
