A Word From the Pastor

New Member's Class

As we discussed this past November, the church is beginning a New Members' Class. Our constitution states that those who join with Front Street Baptist Church are expected to go through a New Members' Class. This will not only benefit those coming to our church, but will benefit us as a church. Thom Rainer and Chuck Lawless have done much research on the topic of membership classes. In 1997, Rainer did a study of growing churches of which 73% of them expected or required a New Members' Class before joining. In 2005, Chuck Lawless researched 150 growing churches. These were not only churches that were increasing in baptism, but churches who were growing and retaining members. Of these churches, 73% expected or required membership classes. As is seen in these two studies, in the last ten years, the number of churches offering the membership class remained the same. The interesting fact is that in the latest study, the number of churches who required the class as a prerequisite to church membership doubled.

Why would Front Street expect people to go through a four week class before becoming a member? There are many reason to which I will try to highlight some of them. First, our constitution requires us to offer a membership class for new members. Second, the membership class is evangelistic. It will allow us to talk with people in a small group about their relationship with Christ where we do not always have an opportunity to do that. Third, a membership class raises the level of commitment. When joining a church, it is important for each person to understand they are part of the body of Christ as described in 1 Corinthians 12. The body is designed for each person to fulfill certain roles. If each person is not doing their part, then we are not being who God wants us to be. Fourth, this class will show that we place a high value on membership. Membership is not something to be taken lightly but is very important. Fifth, the class will allow us to share the vision and direction of the church. This will help people determine if this is where God is calling them to serve.  Finally, the membership class will provide an element of fellowship. As people come to the class, they will be spending four weeks with others who are in the same boat. I feel sure there will be many meaningful relationships built during this time. It will also allow new members to meet the staff and develop a relationship with each staff member. With this being the case, the new members will have someone to call that they know should a situation arise where they need a pastor.

I am very excited about this new class and I believe it is going to be a valuable asset to our church. The first class will begin February 1, and will last four weeks. The class will meet from 9:00 - 10:15 on Sunday mornings in the Conference Room (also known as the Creative Arts Worship Room). If you are interested in this class, please contact the church office, 704-872-7623 or email Jessica at Jessica@frontstreet.org. Beginning February 1, it is necessary for all those seeking membership at Front Street to attend this class. If you are a relatively new member at Front Street, or you would just like to find out more information about the church, this will be a great class for you. It is important to note that if you attend this class, you will not be required or pressured to join Front Street. Our desire is that you find the church home where God is leading you to invest your life.

It's heartbreaking, but every day 3,300 women end their pregnancies with abortion.  They believe it's their only real option.  Imagine facing that decision - without support, without answers.  Is it any wonder why so many pregnancies are terminated?

As believers, we have the opportunity and privilege to share God's truth with women who find themselves in this situation.  We can offer compassion and hope for the future.  This is the work of our local pregnancy center.  By extending care, support and encouragement, we believe a woman's life can be changed forever - for the good.

This month, as a church, we are collecting change or money of any kind, in baby bottles to be returned at the end of the month to donate to the Pregnancy Resource Center of Statesville.  We also have collections sites within the church for diapers (sizes 0, 1 and 2).  If you did not pick up your baby bottle this Sunday - please start collecting your change and pick one up next week.  This is a wonderful way to involve the whole family in a local ministry project!

"Your frame was not hidden from me when I made you in the secret place."

Psalm 139:15

All groups will meet in the breezeway

"When World Views Collide"

Led by Pastor Tim  (Wednesday nights)

Perhaps more than ever before, our culture is being influenced by non-Christian belief systems. Here's a new small-group study written by a former Muslim designed to develop a Christian's theology and doctrine for the purpose of building confidence in personal evangelism and engaging their culture with absolute biblical truth. In addition, it helps adults identify ways false teachings make an impact on our society and to take actions that promote a biblical worldview. Other faiths covered include Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and Buddhist.

"Esther: It's Tough Being A Woman"

by Beth Moore

Led by Kim Rector & Manda Stegall

(Wednesday nights)

Going up against heavyweights bent on her destruction, Esther trusted God and landed a blow that saved her people. The Old Testament story of Esther is a profile in courage and contains many modern parallels for today's woman. Esther's destiny can be yours as you know more deeply the God who is in your corner. Join Beth in an in-depth and very personal examination of this great story of threat and deliverance. She peels back the layers of history and show how very contemporary and applicable the story of Esther is to our lives. If you've ever felt inadequate, threatened, or pushed into situations that seemed overpowering, this is the study for you. Just as it was tough being a woman in Esther's day, it's tough today. This portion of God's Word contains treasures to aid us in our hurried, harried, and pressured lives.

"Nurture Your Marriage"

Led by Cindy Tucker   (Wednesday nights)

A study for women (married and engaged) to encourage and strengthen our role in the marriage relationship as God intended.  Our main resource will be The Bible and will also include a number of solid marriage writings.  Some of the topics included in this 12 week study are: Don't Follow Your Heart, Choose to Lead it, Protecting Your Husband's Reputation and Yours, Love Believes the Best, Unconditional love, Accountability and Love is a Covenant.  Society is attacking marriages and families from all directions.  Join us as we seek to learn godly principles we can practice on a daily basis.  Please note that class size limit is 12.

"The Mind of Christ" by T.W. Hunt

Led by Don Lourcey   (Sunday nights)

This 12 week, in-depth discipleship study based on Philippians 2:5-11 teaches believers how to think the thoughts of Christ or how to have the mind of Christ. This practical, thoroughly scriptural study includes topics like freedom in Christ, becoming like Christ, the servant mind, the glory of humanity, Christ's conduct among humans, living in the Spirit, the poles of holiness and love, the crucifixion, the resurrection, and the kingdom within.

"Study of Jonah"

Led by Marvin Boyer  (Sunday nights)

Jonah went about as deep as he could go, and that fact becomes the challenge for us to go as deep as we can go in the study of the book named for him.  We already know how things turned out in the end, but surely there's more along the way in our study that will benefit us.  In addition to seeing things and people that were contemporary with Jonah, we shall draw conclusions from the text which, along with current illustrations and applications, are available to help us take a strong stand in our Christian lives.  Using some questions, discussions, alliterations, humor, and puzzles, we shall diligently dig for truth in this little book.

Medical Missions Trip to Honduras

Our church Is sending eleven people to Honduras in February to run a week-long medical clinic at a Baptist church in Choluteca, helping them to reach their community.  The physical and spiritual needs are great in Honduras.  We are working with the Honduras Baptist Convention in partnership with the NC Baptist Men.  We have one doctor, five nurses, a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician, an interpreter, and two additional workers participating in this mission.  We will be hiring a Honduran physician to work with us who will also help coordinate our efforts with the Honduran healthcare system.  Additionally, we will be hiring two Honduran interpreters to help us with communication in the work of the clinic.

Each participant has been asked to cover their expenses with personal funds and possibly by raising support through friends and family.  Each person is also contributing to additional costs of the trip.

This is where you can help out.  The cost of needed medications and supplies to use in our clinic's pharmacy is over $2,500.  We also have purchased Spanish New Testaments and other literature.  In addition, there are expenses of hiring a doctor and two interpreters.  All together, the expenses of the clinic (not including the expenses of the participants) are totaling over $4,500.

If you would like to help us reach Honduras with the good news of Jesus Christ through this medical clinic, you may make a contribution to the clinic's expenses by simply marking Honduras Missions on your check made out to the church.  Or, click this link to make a donation online:  http://fsmissions.info/Donation.html

Any donation you make will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Your Honduras Medical Missions Team
