A Word From the Pastor

Homecoming this Sunday

Front Street Baptist Church was officially organized August 27, 1911. This year we celebrate 98 years of God's work through the body of Christ at Front Street. Front Street has such a rich heritage of being on mission with Christ. My prayer is that we continue to follow and serve our Savior until He comes!

This coming Sunday is going to be a special treat for all of us. Rev. Daniel Harmon will be bringing the message. Daniel is the son of Ronnie and Judy Harmon and was a lifelong member of Front Street until God called him to be the Youth Pastor at Beulah Baptist here in Statesville. Daniel is doing a great work at Beulah and we are all so proud of him. God has given Daniel a special anointing to preach the Gospel and I know that he will have a word from God that we all need to hear. Let's join together this week in praying for Daniel and for our time of worship Sunday morning.

Immediately following the service, we will have a covered dish luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. If you are unsure of what would be best to bring, the staff is available all week long to sample various foods and make suggestions. Sunday will be a great time of fellowship and celebrating as we give thanks to God for all He has done in our church and all He continues to do.

Looking forward to Sunday!

 Church Wide Meeting

On Wednesday evening, August 26, we will have a church wide meeting to begin discussions surrounding the issues before us. The meeting will take place at 6:30 in the sanctuary. After this initial meeting, the different groups will meet to discuss specific plans for their areas of ministry.  I pray that God would unite us around His will and vision for our church family.

 New Church Year Begins!

Our new church year begins in September.  Children and Youth will move up into their new Sunday School classes on September 6.  The children will be going directly to their classrooms beginning in September, rather than beginning in the Fellowship Hall. The youth need to begin in the youth room on the 6th, and they'll be directed to their classrooms from there.

Celebrate Recovery News.......

We have another great week upcoming for Celebrate Recovery.   One of our own Front Street church members is going to share a personal testimony.   This person has experienced a great deal during her life and God has been very present with her.  Please come and join us on Monday, August 24 at 6:30.  We will be meeting in the Jabez Sunday School class room as our youth will be in the fellowship hall.  We will be serving Subway sandwiches with chips, potato salad, tea and lots of desserts.   We also want to Thank the Subway Shop at Exit 42 Troutman for donating sandwiches for one of our meetings.   This Subway has been very supportive of our ministry so if you are in their store, please tell them Thank you.   We encourage you to come to CR and check it out.   You'll be glad you did.  This mission is much needed by our community.  If you want to practice GRACISM, as we have been discussing in our Sunday Schools, this is a great place to begin!

Do you know that Celebrate Recovery can offer you support with dieting and/or food addictions?   Here's some information to help.

The Food Problem

·         Do you struggle with over-eating or constant dieting?

·         Have you been on a diet and lost the weight, but need support not to go back to unhealthy behaviors?

·         Do you ever feel out of control and unable to stop eating?

·         Do you eat out of frustration, anger, fear or boredom?

·         Do you eat to feel comfort?

Throughout our lives many of us have turned to food to ease our pain or fear.  We felt comfort in eating and found ourselves turning to food whenever we were hurt, angry or frustrated.  Food became our comforter, our friend.

Some of us may have one certain food that we cannot stop eating or are unable to eat only in healthy amounts.  Some may have been emotionally, physically or sexually abused and use food to copy with the emotions of those events.  We may have had healthy eating habits as children or young adults, but at some point in our lives we chose to overeat and lost the ability to discern when we were physically hungry or when we were physically full.

Some of us may have turned to food after obtaining sobriety in other areas.  Often people that have quit smoking will become over eaters because of changes in the taste of food or as something to do with their hands.    We thought food was Safe, not realizing it could become our "drug of choice".   We have focused on our body image instead of our health.

Many of us have tried various diet programs, exercising, medications or many other ways of trying to control our eating habits.  We have failed over and over and are left feeling guilty, in capable and unlovable.  We have given in to the idea that there is one perfect diet or pill out there than can save us, if we could only find it.

We may in correctly assume that thin people do not struggle with food addiction.  We have also failed to recognize food as our "drug of choice".   As a result o four food addictions we feel out of control and may struggle with many other areas of our lives that are also out of control.   We may have low self-esteem which may affect our motivation, and our relationship with God and others.

You have a choice

Only you can decide if Celebrate Recovery is for you.   Try to keep an open mind on the subject.   Celebrate Recovery Program encourages fellowship and to celebrate God's healing power through the 12 steps and 8 Recovery Principals.   This experience allows us to be changed.   We open the door by sharing our experiences, strengths, and hopes with one another.  We support each other but cannot FIX each other.  We become willing to accept God's Grace in solving our lives problems.  Celebrate Recovery is based on God's Word, the Bible, and emphasizes personal responsibility and spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ.    We utilize biblical truth that we need each other in order to grow spiritually and emotionally.   By working and applying these biblical principles, we begin to grow spiritually.   We become free from our addictive, compulsive and dysfunctional behaviors.  The freedom creates peace, serenity, joy and, most important, a stronger personal relationship with God and Others.  As we progress through the program, we discover our personal, loving and forgiving Higher Power, Jesus Christ, the One and Only True Higher Power.

The Celebrate Recovery Solution

·         We came to realize that we could not control our addiction to food and that we are powerless.

·         We have become ready to face our denial and accept the truth about our lives and our food addiction.

·         We are ready to accept responsibility for our actions and make Jesus the Lord of our lives.

·         We are dedicated to learning about healthy eating.

·         We are committed to learning the difference between physical and emotional hunger.

·         We are willing to turn to God when we are not physically hungry.

·         We will begin to view food as fuel for our body so that we will not eat unless we are physically hungry and stop when we are physically full.

·         We are willing to begin the process of recovery and working through the 12 steps to heal ourselves, and start living the life God has planned for us.

·         We are willing to find a sponsor and accountability partner.

·         We realize our group provides a safe place to share our fears, hurt, anger and is also a place to rejoice in victories.

·         We have become willing to face our character defects and work through these feelings in our group.

·         We are willing to take the focus off of food and focus on God.

·         W recognize that recovery from food addition in not about our body image or what foods we eat, but it is about trusting God and having an intimate relationship with Him.

·         We are willing to believe and trust in God's love for us and to see ourselves as He sees us...."fearfully and wonderfully made."

·         By facing our fears we have realized that Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are what we need to overcome.

·         As we surrender our food addiction to God, we will come to know that He is all we need.  We are willing to seek a closer relationship with God.

·         We will continue to seek a daily quiet time with God and will rely on the Holy Spirit as our source of comfort.  We will be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

·         We will use the tools of recovery:  calling our accountability partners, journaling and reading the Bible.

MISSIONS OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL CHURCH MEMBERS!

The Lifewalk for the Pregnancy Resource Center of Statesville will be held on Saturday, September 19th, with registration beginning at 8:30 am and the walk starting at 9:15 am.  This is a 2 mile walk to be held at First Baptist Church and we need walkers of all ages.  Walkers as young as 6 may sign up on their own and get their own pledges.  After the walk, there will be a light brunch and prizes will be awarded.  Because this is one of our Jerusalem missions, we would love to have a large representation from Front Street this year.  Adults can sign up with Kisha Clark and youth and children can sign up with Madison Clark.  For additional information, call 704-878-9036.

How to Become Part of the Front Street Family

First, we would like to thank you for your interest in Front Street.  Before becoming a member, we feel that you should truly understand our heart and vision before you join our church family, and the new member's class is designed to help you have a clear understanding of your new church family.

Please note that you are not required to join Front Street after attending the New Member's Class.  In fact, you will not be pressured in any way to join.  We want to encourage you to continue to seek God's will on whether He desires for you to plant your life here with us.

The new member's class is a four week class, held during the Sunday School hour.  The next class will be held  in October.  Those dates for the adult class or for the children's class are October 4, 11, 18 and 25.  To sign up for the adult class (which includes youth), or to sign your child up for the children's class, please contact the church office at (704) 872-7623 or email Pastor Tim at tim@frontstreet.org.

Iredell County Fair Ministry

Your Association of 73 Churches ministers every year to the carnie workers that comes to the fair to work. This year the fair is September 6-12.

Now is the time to volunteer. We serve 2 meals a day, give hair cuts, serve snacks, give everyone a Bible, and tell them about Jesus. The whole point is to lead the lost to Christ.  Your SYBAssociation built a beautiful shelter in August at the fair ground to house this ministry. You are needed!
