Prayer
Targets
This
morning (Monday morning), as our staff prayed together, there
were several specific requests that emerged. These things are
near and dear to our heart, but we also feel they are near and
dear to the heart of God. We would like to ask you to join us
in committing to pray for the following items:
·
That we would
experience a freshness of God in worship. We pray that as we
encounter God through His Word and through worship, that we
would be in awe of His majesty and His glory. We pray that we
will encounter the transforming power of Christ each time we
gather. 2 Chronicles 7:1-3, Psalm 29:2, Psalm 86:8-10 and
Psalm 100:1-3
·
That God would
bless us with an outpouring of His Spirit. We pray that God
would fill us with His Spirit. Isaiah 44:3-4, Isaiah 58:11 and
Ephesians 5:17-21
·
That God would
revive our hearts. We pray that a
revival would begin in our hearts and spread to our community
and to our land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 and Psalm 51
·
That God would
give us unity. We pray as Jesus
prayed in John 17 that God would give us the gift of unity.
John 17:20-23 and Philippians 2:1-10
·
That we would be
on alert, operating in the Spirit and not the flesh.
We know that Satan
wants to destroy us. Families and individuals all around us
are under attack. We pray that we will be sober and vigilant,
putting on the armor of God, and walking according to the
Spirit and not the flesh. 1 Peter 5:8-11, Ephesians 6:10-20,
and Galatians 5:16-26
·
That God would be
honored with our lives. We pray for my
sermon preparation and delivery, that God would be honored and
glorified. Jeremiah 23:4, 2 Timothy 4:1-5 and Ephesians
6:18-19 We pray for the members of our church as we seek to
glorify God in our heart, thoughts, words and actions. 1
Corinthians 6:19-20, Matthew 15:8-9 and Revelation
5:12-13
·
That we would
experience an increase in baptisms. Baptism does not
transform a life, but indicates that a life has been
transformed. We pray that God would use Front Street to make
Him known from Statesville to the ends of the earth. Matthew
29:18-20, Acts 1:8 and Colossians 4:2-6
·
That we would
experience an increase in prayer. We pray that God
would expand our prayer partnerships and our hunger and thirst
for Him in prayer. Galatians 6:2, James 5:16 and Philippians
4:6-7
Obviously
this list is not exhaustive in the things we need to be
praying for, it is simply the things that are on our heart
this week and the things we are praying for. I always treasure
your prayers as your pastor. Please pray that I will hear from
God each and every week and that I would speak His truth with
love, boldness and passion. This Sunday our text will come
from John 10:1-10. Praise the Lord for His wonderful acts of
kindness and grace toward us! Praise Him for the abundant life
that we only find in Him. Looking forward to Sunday with great
expectations!
I
love you church family!

THE DARAJA CHILDREN'S CHOIR OF AFRICA
TO
PERFORM
IN STATESVILLE, NC
Children from Kenya journey to inspire
and share
their
culture with America
Cultures will unite when The Daraja Children's
Choir of Africa will perform at Fairview Baptist Church on
Friday, October 30, 2009 at 7:00pm to bring a message of joy
and hope through African song and dance.
Daraja means "bridge" in Swahili, and the Choir,
made up of 24 orphans and vulnerable children from Kenya,
serve as a bridge to connect the people of Africa and
America. This is a life-changing opportunity for these
children to learn and experience the American culture, as many
of them have never experienced life outside of Kenya. At
the same time, Americans have the opportunity to step into the
lives of these Kenyan children by hearing their testimonies
and experiencing traditional African song and dance.
Fairview Baptist Church
has been involved in Mission Projects in Kenya for the past
two years and look forward to bringing this cultural
experience to our community. We hope that you will plan
to join us for this exciting evening with the children of
Kenya. A Love offering will be received for the 410
Bridge Ministry Organization. Also a store will be
available with products from Africa for you to enjoy after the
presentation.
The Choir is embarking on two U.S. tours this
year, which includes a stop in (CITY). In spite of
dealing with unimaginable hardships, these children are
overflowing with joy and love, which they are eager to share,
as is evident in their performance.
The Daraja Children's Choir of Africa is part of
The 410 Bridge, a non-profit organization focusing on mission
work in Kenya. The 410 Bridge exists to connect people
within the body of Christ to contribute to the self-developing
capabilities of the people of Kenya.
For more information on this topic and the
organization, visit www.410bridge.org or

Small Groups Beginning!
Wednesday night studies will begin
September 2 at 6:30
Sunday night studies will begin
September 13 at 5:30
Come and be a part of a small group
study!
Opportunities are listed
below.
If you have questions, feel free to
call the leaders of the group.
The Book of James /
Wednesday nights, 6:30
Led by Don
Lourcey
Room
121
We are often
enticed to buy-in to society's view of success, beauty,
relationships and happiness. To the world, truth is whatever
we believe it to be, in other words, truth is relative,
defined by emotions and experiences. Because the world
competes for our attention, we as believers struggle with
authentic, genuine Christian living; we struggle with THE
truth; we struggle with being double-minded. Christian living
is not a drive in neutral but living out in truth what we
believe and profess as it aligns to God's Truth. The letter of
James is a "how-to" book on Christian living. James says that
it is not enough to talk the Christian faith, but we must live
it. This 12 week study in the Book of James will help answer
the questions. "If we say we believe like we should, then why
do we behave like we shouldn't? James offers practical wisdom
to life faithfully, authentically, and
obediently.
Nurturing Your Marriage II
/ Wednesday, 6:30
Led by Cindy
Tucker
Room
104
Nurturing Your
Marriage II is a continuation of the study from last winter
for women (married and engaged) to encourage and strengthen
our role in the marriage relationship as God intended. Our
goal is to live as a godly woman no matter what the response
or the outcome, it's choosing to stay the course. You did not
have to attend the first session to participate in this
session.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it
does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not
self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of
wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the
truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always
perseveres. Love never fails. I Corinthians
13:4-8
Parenting by The Book /
Wednesday, 6:30
Led by Walt
Meadors
Creative Worship Arts
Room
Think of an elaborate
jigsaw puzzle. You can tell from all the different designs and
colors that completing it will be a challenge. There are few
other things you need to know before you start the project.
The border pieces have all been removed. I know it's easier to
start a jigsaw puzzle by putting the edge pieces together
first. That gives you an early sense of accomplishment before
you move on to the difficult stuff. Forgot to mention that
someone threw in some pieces from a different puzzle into the
box. They may look like they belong to this one, but they
don't. They won't fit no matter how hard you try. Ready to
start? You probably can figure it out. All you need is the
picture on the box cover and you can begin. Oops! I forgot to
tell you that the cover to the box has been lost. You're going
to have to guess what the picture puzzle is supposed to look
like. Doesn't this sound like fun? Not really. It's tough
enough when you have all the right pieces, all the edge pieces
and the picture on the box. Take all those things away and
it's anybody's guess what you will come up
with.
Sound familiar?
Welcome to the parenting puzzle. The above example aptly
describes the job of raising children. "Raising children is
the single greatest thing you will ever do. You have been
handed a piece of history in advance, a gracious gift you will
send to a time you will not see and you (the parent) play the
biggest role in how that history will ultimately be recorded".
(take from Grace based Parenting)
You need a plan
for parenting that works and has stood the test of time - The
Book; The Bible. God's instruction guide to parenting. Come
join us on Wednesday nights and develop your plan for raising
your children while not completely exasperating you.
PLACE / Sunday,
5:30
Led by Michelle
Lourcey
Room
112
Find your PLACE! This
small group is more than finding a "place of service" in the
church -- it is finding the "right" place of service based on
your personality, spiritual gifts and life experiences. Even
if you have served the Lord in ministry for years, you can
still learn so much from PLACE. This is a journey to find out
how God has knitted you together to best serve
HIM!
P - Personality
Discovery
L - Learning Spiritual

A - Abilities

C - Connecting Passion with

E - Experiences of

responsibility is to help you find the way that God has
knitted you together . "Before I formed you in the womb I

Book of Jonah / Sunday,
5:30
Led by Pastor
Marvin
Room
121
Last semester,
the "Jonah class" got as far as verse 13 of the first chapter.
We will continue from there after a review of the earlier
verses. Just as Jonah will be going into the depths, so the
class will be going as deep into the Word as they can. Anyone
wishing to participate is welcome to do so even if they were
not in the previous class.
Victoriously Frazzled /
Sunday, 5:30
Led by Dixie
Hare
Room
104
"Our God
is a frazzle-friendly God! Not only will He enter into our
stressful circumstances, He longs to be there to bring His
relief, comfort and joy." These are the opening words of
"Victoriously Frazzled" and eight week light-hearted,
Bible-based course for ladies of all ages. Sessions include:
Frazzle Friendly, Control Freaks and I'm Getting
Old.
College and Career / Sunday
5:30
Led by Tim Stutts
Location: TBA
George Barna estimates that over
the last 10 years, 8 million adults in their twenties have
left the church. That statement hits me like a ton of bricks.
My heart is broken over the number of young adults who no
longer find church to be an essential part of their
life. My prayer is that we will see in a change in that
trend at Front Street Baptist Church. College and Career
ministry is one area where the vast majority of churches are
struggling. I believe God has called me and given me a passion
for this age group in our church.
We are still in the early stages of
planning, but right now we are looking at gathering on Sunday
nights at 5:30. At this point, I am working to secure us a
place to meet each week.
If you are a college freshman or a
college veteran, this is a place for you. If you just started
a new career or have a few years of experience behind you,
this will be a great for you as well. We have several people
who also feel called to this ministry that will be investing
in the lives of these young adults. If this is an area that
interest you, please contact Tim at tim@frontstreet.org to
discuss opportunities for
involvement.

Celebrate
Recovery News.......
We Hope you didn't miss the
Celebrate Recovery Picnic at Stumpy Creek on Lake
Norman last Saturday. We celebrated with three
other area churches with Celebrate Recovery programs;
Southside Baptist in Mooresville, Catawba Heights in Belmont
and Christ Church in Statesville. We had
over 80 people and enjoyed live music, a testimony, boat rides
on the lake and Food, Food, Food. It was a time
filled with lots of love, hugs and praise for what God has
done in our lives! That's why it's called
CELEBRATE RECOVERY!
There
will be NO CELEBRATE RECOVERY this Monday, September 7,
due to Labor Day Holiday.
We will begin again on Monday,
September 14 with a personal testimony from a graduate and now
active leader of Celebrate Recovery, Andy Lineberger,
from Denver, NC. Andy not only has a very strong
testimony of God's Deliverance, but he is a very talented
musician. Andy plays a fantastic acoustic guitar and
sings gospel and Blue Grass gospel music. He will
share both his talent and testimony with us. Also,
The Branches Sunday School class will be
providing supper so come and join us for Spaghetti with all
the trimmings.
We encourage All Front Street Sunday
school classes to get involved. This is a great Class
activity where you can serve others as a team. Not
only can you bless others, but you will find you are Blessed
also. Just see Dan or Brenda Thompson to
sign-up at 704-779-7094 or CR@frontstreet.org .
Do you know that Celebrate Recovery can
offer you support for a variety of hurts, habits and hang-ups
and some of these are things we don't sometimes
recognize. Can you be
Co-Dependent?
What
is Codependency? What is the Problem?
A
codependent person might think:
·
My good feelings about who I am stem from being loved
by you and/or receiving approval from you
·
Your struggle affects my
serenity. My mental attention focuses on solving your
problems or relieving your pain
·
My mental attention is focused on pleasing or
protecting you
·
My self-esteem is bolstered by
solving your problems or reliving your pain.
·
My own hobbies and interests are
put aside for yours
·
Your clothing and personal
appearance are dictated by my desires as I feel you are a
reflection of me
·
I am not aware of how I
feel; I am aware of how you feel
·
I am not aware of what I
want; I ask only what you want
·
The dreams I have for my future
are linked to you
·
My fear of rejection and fear of
anger determines what I say or do
·
I use giving as a way of feeling
safe in our relationship
·
My social circle diminishes as I
involve myself with you
·
I put my values aside in order to
connect with you
·
I value your opinion and way of
doing things more than my own
·
The quality of my life is in
direct relation to the quality of yours
On the surface, codependency may sound like
"Christian living". Codependents always put others first
before taking care of themselves. Aren't Christians
supposed to do that? Codependents give
themselves away. Codependents may even martyr
themselves. Codependency is not a healthy lifestyle.
In the broadest sense, codependency can be defined
as an addiction to people, behaviors or things.
Codependency is the fallacy of trying to control inferior
feelings by controlling people, things and events on the
outside. To the codependent, control or the lack of it
is central to every aspect of life.
As a codependent you:
·
Assume
responsibility for others feelings and behaviors
·
Feel guilty
about others feeling and behaviors
·
Have difficulty
identifying what you are feeling
·
Have difficulty
expressing feelings
·
Are afraid of
your own anger yet sometimes erupt in rage
·
Worry about how
others may respond to your feelings, opinions and
behaviors
·
Have difficulty
making decisions
·
Are afraid of
being hurt and/or rejected by others
·
Minimize, alter
or deny how you truly feel
·
Are very
sensitive to how others are feeling and feel the
same
·
Are afraid to
express differing opinions or feelings
·
Value others
opinions and feelings more than your own
·
Put other
people's needs and desires before your own
·
Are embarrassed
to received recognition, praise or gifts
·
Judge everything
you think, say or do harshly, as "never good
enough"
·
Are a
perfectionist
·
Are extremely
loyal and remain so in harmful situations too
long
·
Do not ask
others to meet your needs or desires
·
Do not perceive
yourself as lovable and worthwhile
·
Comprise your
own values and integrity to avoid rejection or other's
anger
The
Solution for Codependency
Jesus
taught us the value of the individual. He said we are to
love others equal to ourselves, not more than
ourselves. The love of self forms the basis for loving
others. If you do not love yourself, how can
you love others? The differences between a life of
service and codependency take several forms. The
Motivation differs.
·
Does
the individual give himself and his service freely or
because he considers himself to be of little to no
value?
·
Does
he act out of a need to be needed (which means he
actually uses the other person to meet his own
needs; the "helpee" becomes an object to help the
helper achieve his own goals.)
Service
is to be an active choice. The person acts;
The codependent Reacts. Codependent
behavior is addictive rather than balanced. Addictions
control the person instead of the person being in control of
their own life. In Celebrate
Recovery:
·
Codependents
learns to gain self-worth through Jesus
Christ
·
Christianity
and God's Word, The Bible, teach that a person has worth
simply because they were created by God
·
Self-worth
is not based on the work you do or the service you
perform
·
Service
is to be an active choice. Codependents learn to act
rather than react
·
Codependents
allow healthy Christian service to bring joy
·
Christian
faith calls for balance living and taking care of
yourself
·
Codependents
learn to live balanced lives; taking responsibility for their
own health and well being
·
Codependents
learn how to set and hold healthy boundaries and to set limits
for themselves, not allowing others to compromise those
boundaries
·
Codependents
learn to help others in appropriate ways by allowing others to
act independently rather than making others dependent on
them.
·
Codependents
learn to be God-Directed and be free from compulsiveness
knowing that God brings the ultimate
results.

Become Part of the Front Street Family
First, we
would like to thank you for your interest in Front

our heart and vision before you join our church family, and
the new member's class is designed to help you have a clear

Please
note that you are not required to join Front Street after
attending the New Member's Class. In fact, you will not
be pressured in any way to join. We want to encourage
you to continue to seek God's will on whether He desires for
you to plant your life here with us.
The new
member's class is a four week class, held during the Sunday
School hour. The
next class will be held
in October.
Those dates for the adult class or for the children's
class are October 4, 11, 18 and 25. To sign up for the
adult class (which includes youth), or to sign your child

Iredell County Fair
Ministry
Your
Association of 73 Churches ministers every year to
the carnie workers that comes to the fair to work. This year
the fair is September 6-12.
Now
is the time to volunteer. We serve 2 meals a day, give hair
cuts, serve snacks, give everyone a Bible, and tell them about
Jesus. The whole point is to lead the lost to Christ.
Your SYBAssociation built a beautiful shelter in
August at the fair ground to house this ministry. You are
needed! Please volunteer and be a part of this rewarding
ministry. Call
for more information. Call Sandra Harrison
at 704-873-4372 ext.6 or Mary Jane Hoover at
704-873-4372-ext.3. Call- you will be blessed!
